JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs serves as a senior strategic leader responsible for advancing the College of Sciences and Engineering as a premier engine of discovery, innovation, and graduate education. This role is central to establishing a globally competitive, innovation-driven research enterprise. The Associate Dean will lead the development of a high-impact, interdisciplinary research ecosystem that integrates faculty scholarship, graduate education, and external partnerships to address critical scientific, engineering, and societal challenges. The position is responsible for elevating research productivity, expanding graduate program excellence, and strengthening the College's reputation as a national leader in STEM education, innovation, and workforce development.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive research strategy aligned with the College's mission, vision, and growth priorities, positioning the College as a hub for high-impact, interdisciplinary innovation. Drive expansion of sponsored research, with a focus on federal, industry, and foundation funding, and measurable growth in research expenditures and scholarly output. Establish and scale signature areas that leverage institutional strengths and address regional, national, and global challenges (e.g., energy, advanced manufacturing, Computational science, health, sustainability).
  • Provide executive oversight of all graduate programs, ensuring alignment with workforce needs, research priorities, and emerging STEM fields. Lead strategic initiatives to increase graduate enrollment, retention, and degree completion, with a focus on quality, competitiveness, and student success. Advance innovative graduate education models (e.g., interdisciplinary degrees, professional science master's programs, industry-integrated pathways).
  • Cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships with industry, federal agencies, national laboratories, and academic institutions to expand research opportunities and funding pipelines. Position the College as a preferred partner for collaborative research, workforce development, and innovation initiatives.
  • Promote integration of undergraduate and graduate students into the research enterprise as a core component of transformative education. Expand opportunities for graduate student funding, fellowships, assistantships, and research placements.
  • Ensure graduate students are prepared for leadership roles in academia, industry, government, and entrepreneurship.
  • Ensure full compliance with all regulatory, ethical, and institutional requirements related to research and graduate education. Represent the college in university-wide research and graduate education initiatives, committees, and strategic efforts. Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to research growth, graduate success, and program effectiveness.

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant STEM discipline for appointment as tenured Associate/Full Professor
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in research.
