JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position is a 9-month, academic-year, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Environmental Toxicology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate-level courses that support the Environmental Toxicology Program. Potential teaching responsibilities may include, but are not limited to-Organ System Toxicology, Risk Assessment, Bioremediation, Aquatic Toxicology, Air Pollutants and Health, Bioethics, Biochemistry, Environmental Microbiology, and Environmental Regulations and Law. Teaching assignments will be determined by the Department Chair based on programmatic needs, faculty expertise, and student requirements. In addition to teaching and mentoring graduate students, the successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an innovative, externally funded research program in Environmental Toxicology or a closely related discipline and publish research findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals. The candidate will be expected to actively pursue external grants and contracts to support research activities and student training. Service responsibilities include participation in departmental, college, university, professional, and community activities that support the mission of the Environmental Toxicology Program and Southern University and A&M College.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit, mentor, advise and evaluate graduate students, fostering a supportive environment that promotes professional development, research productivity, and teaching excellence.
- Teach graduate-level courses in Environmental Toxicology and related disciplines, using innovative and evidence-based instructional approaches that promote student learning and engagement.
- Promote student engagement in research, internships, and career readiness initiatives aligned with environmental toxicology and related fields.
- Facilitate and participate in workshops, seminars, and professional development activities; encourage student participation in regional and national conferences; and provide mentorship in grant writing and career development.
- Serve on departmental, college, university, and professional committees and contribute to activities that support the mission and strategic goals of the department and institution.
- Develop and maintain an independent, nationally recognized research program that advances knowledge in Environmental Toxicology and contributes to the department's research mission.
- Maintain compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations related to research, laboratory safety, environmental health, and responsible conduct of research.
- Pursue and secure external funding from federal agencies, foundations, and industry partners to support research, student training, and program development; and publish research findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and disseminate scholarly activities through presentations at regional, national, and international scientific meetings.
- Participate in curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation activities, and continuous improvement efforts to maintain the quality and relevance of the Environmental Toxicology Program.
- Perform other duties deemed essential and as assigned by the Department Chair in support of departmental, college, and university priorities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned doctoral degree in Environmental Toxicology, Toxicology, Environmental Sciences, Animal Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Aquatic Toxicology/Microbiology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of postdoctoral, research, or teaching experience in a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of effective teaching, mentoring and research activities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctoral degree in Toxicology or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of postdoctoral, research, or teaching experience in a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience developing externally funded research projects.
- Expertise in molecular, cellular, environmental, computational, aquatic, regenerative medicine, or translational research.
