SULC Alumnus Appointed Magistrate in West Virginia

On April 11, 2019, Southern University Law Center alumnus, Hollis T. Lewis II, will officially be sworn into the Magistrate position for Kanawha County, West Virginia, making him the only African-American appointed to one of the 11 Magistrate positions in the entire county. Lewis, who is also the former assistant Kanawha County Prosecutor, was delegated to the new position by Chief Circuit Judge Joann Tabit who stated that “Lewis will be a real asset to the magistrate court in Kanawha County.”

Lewis will succeed the former Magistrate Judge, Kim Aaron, who is recently retired after having served on the bench for 16 years.

“I hope to bring my experience and knowledge to the courtroom,” says Lewis. “When you’re talking about your government, you want a well-rounded representation of your community.”

Prior to occupying his current position, Lewis also served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin for four years and is still a CEO and trainer for Charleston’s Quarterback Fundamentals Clinic.
