Legacy

The Southern University System, the only historically Black university system in the nation, offers an accessible, wholistic educational experience to a diverse population. It is comprised of five higher education institutions in the three largest cities in Louisiana: Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge (est. 1880), a four-year institution awarding bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees;  Southern University Law Center (est. 1947); Southern University at New Orleans (est. 1956), a four-year institution awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees; Southern University Shreveport (est. 1964), a two-year institution awarding associate’s degrees and certificates; and the Southern University Cooperative Extension Program (est. 1972), which became the fifth component of the System in 2001 and is now named Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. More than 12,000 students are enrolled across these campuses in a vast array of programs that prepare them to participate in rewarding careers in every sector of industry in local, state, national and global marketplaces.
