New officers installation and swearing-in ceremony lead SU Board’s January meeting agenda
Attorney Bridget A. Dinvaut of Reserve will officially be handed the gavel as the 2013 chairwoman when the Southern University Board of Supervisors meets January 11, 2013, in Baton Rouge. Dinvaut replaces Darren Mire who completed two consecutive terms as chairman last December.Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal Friday, January 5, 2013, announced three new appointments and reappointed two members to the SU Board of Supervisors, who will take the oath of office at the Board’s first meeting of the year.
"I am honored to follow Mr. Mire as Board chair and look forward to my continued service to Southern University. We welcome new and returning members to a Board that is dedicated to moving the University forward and to meeting the challenges of an ever-changing higher education environment," said Dinvaut. "It's going to be a good year."
Joining the SU Board will be Michael Small of Slidell, Leon Tarver II of Baton Rouge, and Raymond Fondel Jr. of Lake Charles.
Small is a senior network engineer at Computech Solutions, Incorporated, a Louisiana-based technology professional services company. He will serve as a representative of the 1st Congressional District replacing Warren Forstall.
A familiar figure at SU, Tarver is SU System president emeritus and is the retired executive administrator of the Center for Cultural Heritage and International Programs, Southern University System. Tarver will serve as an at-large member replacing Patrick Magee.
The owner of Raymond Fondel Jr. Insurance Agency, Fondel replaces Patrick Bell, and will serve as a representative of the 3rd Congressional District.
Reappointed to the 16-member board are the Rev. Joe Rascoe Gant Jr. of Shreveport and Antonio "Tony” Clayton of Port Allen.
Gant, who is the senior pastor at Cavalry Missionary Baptist Church, will serve as a representative of the 4th Congressional District.
Clayton, the senior partner at the law firm of Clayton and Frugé and the assistant district attorney of the 18th Judicial District, will serve as a representative of the 6th Congressional District.
The SU Board of Supervisors will hold its regular meeting January 11 at 9 a.m. in the Board Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, J.S. Clark Administration Building, on the Southern University campus. An election for the vice chairman’s position also is on the agenda.

The Board of Supervisors of Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College serves to manage and supervise the Southern University System.
According to the Louisiana Constitution, the board is comprised of 15 gubernatorial appointees, including two gubernatorial appointees from each congressional district, and the remaining appointed members shall be from the state at large. A student representative is elected to serve by the Southern University Council of Student Body Presidents. All appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
