Ruth W. Johnson, director of SUNO's Educational Talent Search Program, was elected secretary for the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) Board of Directors. The council, based in Washington, D.C., represents TRiO programs which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The members of the Board are appointed by the Governor of the State to overlapping six year terms. Their appointments are subject to confirmation by the Louisiana State Senate. The sixteen-member Board consists of two members from each of the State’s Congressional Districts, three members from the State at large and one student member.

Behind the push of United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., the Senate, late last night, confirmed Stephanie Finley as U.S. Attorney for Louisiana's Western District. Sen. Landrieu recommended Finely for the post in July of last year.

The Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives Y.E.S. After-School program will host a Career Day on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. for enrolled students ages 6-14. Local professionals from various career fields will participate and provide hands-on demonstrations, including a police officer, a fireman, entrepreneurs, a beautician, a judge, a chef, a funeral director, an attorney, a coach, a doctor, and a dentist.

Section 1. Chairman and Vice-Chairman. A. Election. The Board shall elect officers at its November meeting each year, for a term beginning January 1. These officers shall be the Chairman and Vice Chairman. The terms of the Chairman and Vice Chairman shall be for a period of one year. An officer of the Board shall not serve more than two years in the same position during any six-year term appointment as a member of the Board.

SU quarterback Bryant Lee threw four touchdown passes to help give the Jaguar's its first SWAC win of the season. The Jaguars defeated Alcorn State 48-42 at home in A.W. Mumford Stadium on Saturday, September 26.
