Longtime Southern University administrator and ardent University supporter Elton C. Harrison died September 20, 2014. He was 97 and a resident of Baton Rouge.

Harrison served as vice president of Academic Affairs and was a former member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors.

SUS awarded USDA Grant

The Southern University System recently received a $42,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide technical business training in rural communities throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded $212,500 in grants to support workforce training in Louisiana.

Lawrence Jackson, director of the world-renowned Southern University "Human Jukebox" Marching Band, is retiring. The Crowley native has been director of bands on the Baton Rouge campus since 2006.

The Southern University System is deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Nelson Mandela former president of South Africa. In 2000, Mandela was invited to Southern University and to Baton Rouge by then SU System President Leon R. Tarver II.
