SUS awarded USDA Grant

The Southern University System recently received a $42,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide technical business training in rural communities throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded $212,500 in grants to support workforce training in Louisiana.

SU director of bands announces his retirement

Lawrence Jackson, director of the world-renowned Southern University "Human Jukebox" Marching Band, is retiring. The Crowley native has been director of bands on the Baton Rouge campus since 2006.

A symposium on "Quality Education as a Constitutional Right and the Role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)" will be hosted by the Southern University and A&M College System (SUS), the Southern University Law Center (SULC), and the SULC Journal of Race, Gender, and Poverty, in partnership with the Mississippi Freedom 50th Anniversary, Wednesday and Thursday, March 26-27, 2014.

The Southern University System is deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Nelson Mandela former president of South Africa. In 2000, Mandela was invited to Southern University and to Baton Rouge by then SU System President Leon R. Tarver II.
Tropical Storm Karen update

National Hurricane Center forecasters expect Tropical Storm Karen to be near the central Gulf Coast on Saturday as a weak hurricane or tropical storm. A tropical storm watch is in effect from west of Grand Isle to east of Morgan City, an area that includes metropolitan New Orleans, Lake Maurepas, and Lake Ponchartrain.

At this time, we do not expect TS Karen to affect campus operations.

SU System announces new VP for academic and student affairs

The Southern University System welcomes Monique Guillory-Winfield as the new vice president for academic and student affairs. Guillory-Winfield possesses more than 15 years of experience in higher education administration including her most recent position as an associate with The Barthwell Group, a boutique management-consulting firm based in Detroit, Michigan, with an array of higher education clients.
SU System Statewide Town Hall Tour continues

The Southern University System is hosting a series of statewide town hall meetings for alumni, stakeholders, and supporters during August. The tour, "Transforming the Southern System: From Good to Great," began with a meeting in Baton Rouge August 8, 2013, and will conclude with a stop in New Orleans, Monday, August 19.
