Southern University Shreveport TRiO programs will receive over $9 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant check will be presented during the press announcement Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 10 a.m. in the atrium of the Dr. Leonard Barnes Administration Building which is located on the main Shreveport campus, 3050 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Southern University at Shreveport is slated to lose $2,647,305 in state funding if a budget bill, HB1, is not amended by the Louisiana legislature.

As the budget continues to move through the state's legislature, higher educational institutions are expected to see a reduction of more than $200 million in state support. Particularly hard hit are the schools within the Southern University System, the nation's only system of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The proposed budget cuts to the higher education could derail Southern University's effort to climb out of exigency and to lift furloughs from hundreds of employees on the Baton Rouge campus, Chancellor James L. Llorens said today.

The Southern University and A&M College System (SUS)--America's only historically black college and university system, an asset vital to the state of Louisiana and to the nation--will be devastated by the proposed budget cuts currently being considered by the Louisiana Legislature.
